Jeff compares plans from carriers like these

Two kinds of protection, one local agent

Whether you are planning for yourself or for someone you love, Jeff compares several carriers and explains each policy in plain English before anything is signed.

Final expense insurance

A whole life policy for the costs at the end of a life: the funeral, a headstone, a last medical bill. The money goes to the person you name, to use however the family needs.

  • Coverage between $5,000 and $25,000+
  • No medical exam required. Approval depends on your answers to health questions.
  • Plans cannot increase in price, and do not expire

Mortgage protection

Life insurance sized to your home loan, so the people you live with can keep the house if you pass away. Depending on the carrier, some policies also include living benefits if a serious illness keeps you from working.

  • Coverage matched to your mortgage balance
  • Term lengths matched to the years left on the loan
  • Not the same as the PMI your lender may require

Why families call a local agent instead of the number on TV

A policy from a TV or mail offer can be the right one. The difference is who helps you choose, whether anyone explains the fine print before you sign, and whether you are overpaying just for convenience.

Some people come here to put their own affairs in order. Others are helping a parent. Either way, it starts with one folder that says where everything is, and the person being covered stays in charge.

Jeff Harrison, independent final expense and mortgage protection agent

I'm Jeff Harrison, and I'll be here after you sign.

For more than 20 years I've helped local families with final expense and mortgage protection. I'm independent, so I compare several companies instead of selling one, and I take the time to listen and make sure a plan fits. I'll tell you about waiting periods before you sign, not after. And I don't disappear once the paperwork is done: if there's a question, a change, or a claim to file, you call me and I pick up. My job is to make this a weight off your shoulders, not one more thing to worry about.

Final expense or a prepaid funeral plan?

Final expense insurance is a whole life policy for the costs at the end of a life. A prepaid funeral plan is a contract with one funeral home. Many people mix them up, so here is the difference in plain English.

Is this the same as the funeral home's prepaid plan? No.

Questions families ask first

Many people want to ask here first, before they end up on a spam list. These are honest, general answers. Every policy has its own terms.

Can I buy a policy for my parent?

Your parent is the applicant and policy owner, so they need to agree and take part in the application. You can do the research, sit in on the call, help with the paperwork, and often be named the beneficiary. In many cases an adult child can pay the premium, too.

Do I need a medical exam?

Usually not. Most final expense policies ask health questions instead of an exam or blood work. If health rules those out, guaranteed issue policies ask no health questions, with a waiting period. Which one fits depends on the answers.

How is this different from the funeral home's prepaid plan?

A prepaid plan is a contract with one funeral home for specific goods and services. Final expense insurance pays money to the person you name, who can use it at any funeral home or for other bills. If you already have a prepaid contract, keep a copy in the family file and read what happens if plans or towns change.

What happens if a payment is missed?

Most policies have a grace period, often around 30 days, to catch up. After that the policy can lapse, and getting it back may mean new health questions. Two simple guards: set the draft for the day Social Security arrives, and ask the carrier to send missed-payment notices to a family member as well.

Will I get a bunch of sales calls?

Not from Jeff. The checklist asks for your name, email and phone so Jeff can send it and answer questions, not to sell your number. Checking prices does not put you on a spam list. If you want to talk, you choose the time, and family is welcome on the call.

How fast is a claim paid?

It depends on the carrier and the situation. Many straightforward claims are paid within a few weeks once the carrier has the death certificate and claim form. Claims in the first two years can take longer because the carrier may review the application. Jeff can't promise a date, but he helps your family file, finds out what the carrier is waiting on, and follows up so you are not chasing it alone.

What is mortgage protection, and is it the same as PMI?

No. PMI protects your lender if a loan goes unpaid. Mortgage protection is life insurance that protects your family: if you pass away, it pays a benefit your family can use to pay off or keep up with the mortgage. Depending on the carrier, some policies also pay living benefits after a serious illness. Jeff can show you options matched to your balance and the years left on the loan.

Am I too old to get coverage?

Probably not. Many final expense carriers accept applicants into their 80s, and each one sets its own age limits and health questions. The instant quote tool shows what is available for your age and ZIP code.

Can I get coverage with diabetes or another health condition?

Often, yes. Many carriers accept common conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or a past heart issue, sometimes at standard rates. Your answers to the health questions decide which carriers fit, and because Jeff compares several, he can point you to the ones most likely to say yes.

Does the policy build cash value?

Most final expense policies are whole life, so they build a small cash value over time that you can borrow against. It grows slowly. The main purpose is the benefit your family receives.

How much coverage do I need?

Start with the funeral you actually want. Funeral homes are required to give you a written price list, so ask one near you. Add any small bills that would be left, then choose an amount the monthly budget can keep up with for years.

Start with the questions. Decide when you're ready.
